Remember loving the X-Wing books as a kid, still do after revisiting them. But definitely a lot of "men writing women by introducing them with how hot they are" going on.

Hell, the Armaverse has been doing this quite well.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Alpha Strike, a rule system for Battletech that's meant to cut down on bookkeeping and be more fluid to play

Yeah, MWD certainly seems like the less grognard oriented experience, lol.

Today, almost none of those things are true. All of those qualities can be found online in ways that would far exceed what you could put on TV in terms of shock value. Once again, wrestling must stand out with its unique storytelling medium and the talent of the performers over "Car crash TV".

I think the huge US wrestling TV ratings of the late 90s were a confluence of it being edgy in content (in the same way Jerry Springer was for example), the seemingly unpredictable nature of it being live, and as you've said lack of competition (esp. in summer when both TV and sports on break)

I think BF and CoD are the last vestiges of the "lobby hangout shooter". So much of the FPS landscape is focused around competitive frameworks and escalating metas, that to me it feels like that "sandbox shooter" has been neglected. The studio consolidation stuff is 100% very concerning, though.

The 100 million player target is ludicrous, I agree. But given the extremely shaky recent history of Battlefield, a return to fundamentals is sorely needed I think. There's is not really any game that provides what BF does, honestly.

China is one of the growth areas for games markets, plus if you're a publisher do you really want to deal with Chinese netizens when the PLA doesn't get the wolf warrior treatment.
July 24, 2025 at 9:55 PM
I think you're unlikely to see a game from a publicly traded company at this budget and scale touch anything too real world. Nobody at the major publishers really wants to touch Russia when there's an active war on.

The weird shift in vibe between MW19 and MW 2022 starts to make sense when you learn that the narrative leads left between games.

Having finished the Russian campaign, it mirrors the US one in some ways. Theme of how poorly prepared the Russians are; early missions involve rationing out vehicle crews to pick over a depot of obsolete equipment, and a raid on a refinery for fuel because the logistics planning was so poor.
