Still on the GOAT list. Looking forward to the comets.

If I had locally hosted hardware powered by my solar and battery powerplant at home, using ethically trained models, I'd be more okay with it. But for everyone who'd take this approach, there are probably millions more who just use the free thing. It will take a big shift to stop this now.

Getting inference efficiency down is like pissing into the wind, because people have started using it for everything, all the time. Even unintentionally, there are tons of inferences being invoked per page load of the most commonly used sites. Until the bubble pops, we are just boiling the ocean.

Yep, the sales pitch is straight BS

I also don't understand why more software engineers aren't pissed at the theft of their work like artists are. What we do takes skill and experience, and it is just as artful as any other act of creation - even if it's just for some business SaaS. The theft is also the part using all the energy too!

If this had stayed entirely in the realm of "just another (but way more general) code generator", not to mention avoiding copyright theft, it would have been a somewhat interesting tool change. But this bubble is truly awful and I can't wait for it to pop so we can get back to meaningful work.

It has sucked a lot of the fun out of my job and I have a lot of objections to the current situation on many fronts. It's not useful for the average punter, and all these vibe-coding CEOs are digging themselves massive holes. It's also eating the talent pipeline (because of credulous CTOs hyping it)

I've been working with Claude (quite begrudgingly it must be said) for a few months now. It is only useful in the hands of a balanced team of experts, and it is not doing the majority of our work. You need to feed it a lot of documentation, and also prompts basically have to be documents to work.

My hot take is we have an inflated sense of how special we are relative to other conscious beings. Corvids, Elephants, Cephalopods, Cats, Dogs, they all show signs of subjective experience. They simply have fewer, or different, cognitive and physical faculties. IMO it's a matter of degree, not kind.

Humanity the species or the idealised collective moral indentity?

so even with a loosey goosey bullshit definition of Return, it's still only 40-47%? Sad.

Every time a "delivery was attempted", every phone bill increase, every internet outage, every supermarket receipt, every unfair dismissal.. little Johnny is always there having contributed some small piece of evil. But people want to praise him for a single failure to be inept that one time.

Thought so. Thanks for raising this!

I wonder if we could create a Dyson sphere around each billionaire's head and live off the excess energy of their egos
December 16, 2025 at 1:36 AM
Which RT? This is ringing alarm bells

The part that gets me is pretending these are all small indie businesses and the creator needs audience support

But he is wearing a leather jacket

I'd rather eat McDonald's than watch this

That is grim
