I'm working on a theory in my head that natural language support with a well designed model is how we get there.

It's not just you. As a consultant in this area, I'd say this is more the nom than the exception. Part of the blame lies on Microsoft pushing the fable of Self Service BI so hard, it leaves the impression that you can just be hands off with Power BI and it manages itself.

We just had this discussion yesterday. I hate seeing Power BI used as an application and had the same fears you stated.
