But like the naked 13 year olds are in the art! It is not a hidden fact!

It speaks to an incredible lack of curiosity on her part.

Also IMO it’s actually worse to know enough to have a favorite 19th century painter but not enough to have looked into that person’s whole deal, than to just not be into art at all.

I feel for her bc I love the period and movement Gaugin is associated with and liked a lot of his work when I was younger. Then MeToo happened and I realized how creepy it is that he painted naked children who he also definitely raped, and that he was able to do it bc of colonialism.

Also a lot of people in coastal cities who have this background aren’t talking a lot about it in these types of social settings.

Why fly to some island off the coast of Florida to fuck teenagers? It’s like driving in 405 traffic to eat at McDonald’s when you live next door to In-N-Out.

This particular development seems like 19th century colonial maternalism enforcing binary gender norms, with extra steps.

Ah, that key priority of global south development: fuck dem Hijras.

Careers known to pay enough to drag up home prices!

This looks like an episode of that 2000s home decor show Trading Spaces where one of the designers went apeshit for furniture appliqués and gold spray paint.

Call me crazy but I feel strongly that if you’re counting the months that’s pedophilia
November 15, 2025 at 7:53 AM
Oh god do not let anyone’s dead almond mom into the fridge.
November 15, 2025 at 7:50 AM
Which is not saying a lot
November 15, 2025 at 4:28 AM
Which is crazy bc other than being a guy named Frankenstein it bears no resemblance to the book whatsoever

(Hyperbole but not by much)

OK I am hereby going to shut my trap about EVER complaining about my school district again, bc you just described my child’s elementary school.

That phrase is actually something I remember from some flavor of YA novel I read ages ago. I definitely remember an era when, if anything, MCs were *too* described.

I live in Los Angeles and have had a lizard in my house before, sure. But again, it’s only considered charming if you’re an attractive and wealthy young white woman. Otherwise you’re just someone who can’t afford an exterminator.

I'm somewhat in the same boat, even with romance, because IDK, there's only so many sets of "luminous violet eyes" I can take. But also it's weird for publishers to set as a matter of company policy that they don't want to see physical descriptions because they think it hampers readers' engagement.

"We really want romance readers to collect all the books"

Aaaaaaand there you have it.

The old standalone bodice-rippers were semi-disposable. Now, romance novels need to be something defined by their status as an item to own.

You're thinking of the Book of Common Prayer, but I'll allow it.

Why does it merit purple prose when a white woman lives in a tiny vermin-filled* house in Malibu, but if this was a person of color in East LA or Compton the authorities would be at her door?

*Sure, lizards are fine, but by definition they're not supposed to be in your house.
November 14, 2025 at 6:17 PM
That's, like... a medium woke opinion.
November 14, 2025 at 6:07 PM
To become naturalized? Sure.

To enter the US and live here on a permanent basis? Not unless they were Chinese-Americans, and even then, it depends on the year and their circumstances. (Paper Sons being the big exception.)
November 14, 2025 at 6:04 PM
So had she never seen a Gauguin painting either, or nah?
November 14, 2025 at 7:41 AM
I just read a novel with what amounts to a Victorian orphan as a main character and for most of the book he’s like “THE DEMON INSIDE OF ME DEMANDS REVENGE also I cannot afford a ticket to the Chicago Worlds Fair”

Literally actually the same network had 24/7 coverage of the Paula Jones tapes 30 years ago. Wheel out Wolf Blitzer and it’s the same people doing the reporting.
