Lucky for me, I lived with my grandparents who survived the Depression, so I have my grandma’s old cookbook. Of course, they were in Mississippi, so lard seemed to play a big part. Can’t imagine why my grandpa had a triple bypass in 1979, even though he was skinny as a rail.

Nobody gets it automatically. If you’ve ever needed SNAP, you know the hoops you had to jump through in order to qualify. Also, if you aren’t disabled, or caring for a child or other family member, you’re required to look for work. No work? You’re forced to volunteer somewhere or lose benefits.
