Surveillance capitalism is bad, yes, but the worst harms come when governments demand data from them in order to take action against individuals and breaking encryption just makes that easier.

I mean they're free to use whatever tools they want but given the EU's push to gut encryption to make it easier for governments to spy on citizens I think this is mostly performative.

The most common example cited is like... Armed robbery. There is a risk that robbing people at gunpoint will result in someone's death. So if a person participates felony murder allows them to be prosecuted even if they didn't fire a weapon.
