In my experience, most people trying to cheese it with GenAI are also using transcription tools. You're not likely to get much (if any) variation in GenAI's answer to an interview question if someone is using it.

Sometimes, a good approach is to run a question through GenAI and compare it to the answer you expect from a competent human being. If it's very different/grossly overexplained when GenAI answers it, you've got a good trap.

Interview questions that take advantage of GenAI's weaknesses to catch cheaters are also useful. A couple examples: Questions that can be answered in 1-2 words (AI likes to write a book on those) and questions with implicit requirements easily understandable by a human but that AI doesn't catch.

Except, a lot (if not most) interviewers aren't even catching this, and letting these fake devs get jobs instead. Most of these devs who feel a need to use AI for an interview can't even use AI competently, much less, understand their code.

I value job security, therefore, we need GenAI to be in widespread use for new developers. In its current state, GenAI used in excess as a coding tool is going to be great senior developers. We inevitably have to fix its problems because the people using it won't even know what GenAI did wrong.
