This final scene with Carl Sagan's narration is a direct repeat of the radio interview Elio listens to earlier in the movie in the rooftop scene, both ending with the same question "Are we Alone?" 🥲

This guy's shirt has the Drake Equation on it! It calculates the number of active intelligent civilizations that could be sending out detectable signals into space in our galaxy (N). It multiplies several different factors...basically all the prerequisites that are required to get to that point

This little scope here is very similar to what I use for astrophotography. It is a refractor with an astrophotography camera attached to the back (in place of an eyepiece) and is mounted on a star tracker

Some of the stars in this scene have spikes. I understand why, it's just a cool effect. But it's also worth noting that these diffraction spikes actually only occur when imaging stars through a telescope that has struts supporting a secondary mirror, or a telescope with segmented mirrors

The Universal User's Manual has a sample question of "What lies beyond a black hole?" with this image. This pretty much matches NASA simulations (the intense gravity bending the light of the hot accretion disk on the opposite side) and what is also seen in Interstellar (also based on simulations)

I'm back! Elio gets abducted, this first room in the ship he's on reminds me of Arrival

This patch on his suitcase is the TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Satellite Survey") space telescope which detects exoplanets by measuring the slight dip in luminosity as they pass in front of their solar system's star.

More evidence that Elio is a JWST fan, he's got a little patch for it on his suitcase
September 18, 2025 at 5:03 AM
In this scene Elio is listening to a radio interview with Carl Sagan from October 1985 about aliens a month after he released his novel Contact, which was about a radio astronomer who receives a message from aliens.

I think this poster is the Orion Nebula. I keep seeing it at different angles in this bad lighting but this is my best guess for now unless I can make it out more clearly later. Second image is taken by me :D

Elio is probably really into the Ancient Alien/Astronaut idea (thanks History Channel...). The Ancient Alien idea proposes that ancient geoglyphs were either made by ancient aliens or by humans for ancient aliens with their help (from the air) so that's what this is probably referencing.
September 18, 2025 at 4:33 AM
More space posters in Elio's room. Mars and what looks like the mirrors of the James Webb Space Telescope. Elio is probably excited about the JWST because it's the first telescope with the capability to detect atmospheres on exoplanets

I want this star globe that Aunt Olga has in her office
September 18, 2025 at 4:02 AM
This poster on Elio's wall says "The Milky Way". We don't actually have an image of the Milky Way, and I think this poster is actually a recreation of the Sunflower Galaxy which is a spiral galaxy very similar in size to the Milky Way, except the Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy

This scene just makes me cry

Might be common knowledge but I'll include it here anyway, the Voyager Golden Record is a real thing attached to both Voyager probes. The record has image data on it, as well as music and human greetings as you hear in the movie
September 18, 2025 at 3:22 AM
I can't really make out what's on the other side of the brochure. My guess would be maybe an image of the Voyager probe since it's referenced in the following scene
September 18, 2025 at 3:15 AM
First scene at the cafe of the space museum, this little brochure on the table has (I'm pretty sure) a James Webb Space Telescope image of the Southern Ring Nebula (released in July 2022, Elio was announced September 2022) science.nasa.gov/asset/webb/s...

The fact that this ISNT a popularly highlighted line in The Love Hypothesis, criminal

All done 🥹 Justice for the full HOF epilogue, I love it so much. At least we got the last bit for The Love Hypothesis
