Luitenant T.L. van Wagtendonk invented the first folding bicycle in 1899. Oddly, his invention wasn’t originally intended to save space or allow for easier transportation, instead it was a tactical innovation, allowing wheeled cavalry to play dead, wrapped in their buckled bikes.
