Yeah I don't disagree that it's a precarious situation to put yourself in. It just still feels like best practice even with all the dangers you outlined.

You don't want your QB taking hits with momentum, but you still want him to get those extra yards (which closes the gap with the defender).

When is a QB supposed to slide if not in traffic? If the traffic wasn't there he would just keep running. If your point is he should take a normal hit, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the slide altogether?
