I'd love to give it a rewarch down the line and see if my opinion of it changes. I had a Shinkai film that I thought was a disaster til I talked myself into a rewatch and now it's a favorite.

There are also times where it feels silly to me, but in a way that's dissonant with the tone the film felt like it was going for.

All in all an enjoyable film and I'm glad I saw it, but definitely one of Hosoda's weaker films for me.

It's weaker points was its pacing and flow for one. Felt very rushed and jilted and jumping between one tone and the next at times. When it was good I was super invested and enjoying the flair, when it was okay I felt conflicted because I wanted the film to continue being awesome.

It jumped through a bunch of different themes and ideas and I think it's strongest were themes of like willpower/spirit and the themes of people and connectivity.
