More artefacts than in all museums: It is estimated that there are over 3 million shipwrecks resting on the ocean floor, holding countless historical and cultural treasures. That's more exhibits than in all the museums in the world combined.

There are extraordinary phenomena at the bottom of the ocean, such as underwater waterfalls, denser, colder salt water sinks into the depths. There are also saltwater ‘lakes’ and ‘rivers’ – areas with such high salinity that their water does not mix with the surrounding seawater.

Just scratching the surface: When it comes to direct visual observation, we have explored less than 0.001% of the deep sea (below 200 m).

Exploration and mysteries
A world still undiscovered: Despite technological advances, we have only mapped about 26% of the ocean floor in high resolution. This means that we still know more about the surface of Mars and the Moon than we do about the bottom of our own oceans.
