As a Gen X-er, also puzzled about the Emigre suggestion. Arial is ugh, but many find easy to read, so will use for them. Story writers tend to stick with Times New Roman - I find it comforting and easy to read. Like subtle serif. Garamond is perfectly respectable. Palatino can be cool.
