It’s been a minute since I last shared some dye projects with y’all. I’ve been busy with traveling, harvesting indigo plants I grew this year, and making some indigo vats to dye cloth. But don’t worry - I’ll be dyeing up some new shirts this weekend!

Used a different technique on this shirt. Same dyes as the previous purple shirt, but this one really gave the watercolor effects and some amazing splits!

I had a couple who requested a matching set in shades of blues. The thing about ice dyeing is no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. For these, I used the same colors and approximate pattern.

Something new & different: a reverse. I tied up this black shirt and removed sections of dye before re-dyeing in shades of purple.

First Japanese indigo extraction of the season in June. The plants are growing vigorously in this hot & rainy weather we’re having. I thinned/clipped off a bunch of stems, used the leaves for extraction, then rooted the stems in water & replanted those after 5 days.

A jar of Japanese indigo leaves in rain water after a day of soaking. Checking for the presence of indoxyl by using a black light. Indoxyl is fluorescent in UV light. Aerating to introduce oxygen before adding calx (calcium hydroxide) to cause flocculation. Stems in a jar of rain water. This will grow lots of roots in 5 days.

Tried something else new. This shirt is actually 60% cotton 40% recycled polyester. I wasn’t sure how vivid the color would be but tried it anyway. The color is amazing. Love how it turned out.
