Finally played @halfmermaid.co 's Immortality and locked in for 20 hours of raw and emotional detective work.
I am so glad I played this. It's the soul follow-up to Her Story and Telling Lies.
The story's scale is both staggering and contained, and the narrative design was sublime. A masterpiece 🌟

Thankfully, Red can mitigate the arrival of her mental bankruptcy with social survival tools, including the all-powerful 🫧BUBBLE MODES🫧

When going somewhere, you can pick Red's balance between being open to potential social interactions and staying focused on the task at hand.

Red, our main character, faces the day-to-day challenge of trying to do everything, everywhere, all at once: to do so, she has to juggle not only the stats she's honing, but her Mental Energy, a stat that goes up and down ALL THE TIME

Social interaction? Pay Mental Energy.
Training? Pay.
Exam? Pay.

MMS is a life sim. As a designer with a kink for metaphorical systems, I drew a parallel between the robotic optimisation depicted in the genre and my own life approach as an autistic person.

I'm happy to say that our playtesters have been tortured on a regular basis - which is the point of the game!
Having to balance your social life, boss fights and the timed objectives of academic tests build an anxiety-inducing ecosystem of choices.

Next week, we'll dive into the design logic of it!

As a designer, I'm of the Legos-beads-and-paper house: I LOVE paper prototypes and MMS was a great fit.
I did the first playtests with friends then expanded to strangers (yay discord communities), focusing on the replayability and storytelling around these tiny challenges of combo optimisation.
