My father had two handy sayings re politicians (of any ilk) -

Not the most fun of our lives, but done it is.

In a very real sense they are dealing with a 'death'. Not only of a loss of admiration / friendship, but, also their judgment of people - how could I not have known? It takes awhile to process.

There's a name for people who do this, but my mother has brought me up to be (somewhat) of a civilised person, so I won't say what I'm thinking; plus, I think I would get a stern talking to from TPTB.
