It's #wipwednesday and I struggled so much with which snip of my Steddyhands victorian spiritualism fic to post, so I decided to go with both! I'm working on chapter 4 now, and I'll probably start posting this fic after I have 5 chapters fully written and edited.

Low stepped up alongside him, and Ed made a point of not looking at him, even as he watched him out of the corner of his eye. “Oh, I got that idea from one of my colleagues in the society,” Low said mildly. “He has an entire room devoted to studying mediums. For mediums that require the privacy of a spirit cabinet, he had a harness similar to this built into the confines of a repurposed fireplace.” “I don’t use a spirit cabinet,” Ed pointed out, staring at it uneasily. “Things change,” Low said, parroting Ed’s words back from the day before. “And I wanted to be prepared. The medium could be locked in and completely immobilized, chained into the hearth, and then still be granted their requested privacy by pulling a curtain.” Low’s lip curled when he said privacy, as if it was a dirty word. And in his mind, it probably was. He probably thought any medium who needed privacy to work was just trying to pull the wool over his eyes. “I would have to do some work to a fireplace in order for us to make use of it, of course, but that part wouldn’t take very long.” Ed had never been more fucking grateful he didn’t use a spirit cabinet. “I’m not wearing that thing.” Low shrugged. “If you don’t need to make use of it, that’s fine. I’m sure there will be mediums in the future that do.” Something was wrong. What the fuck was that? “Ed?” Frenchie asked sharply, leaning forward. He didn’t say anything else, but he didn’t need to; Ed met his eyes and shook his head slightly, because he didn’t know what the fuck had just happened. “What happened?” Banes asked bemusedly. “It wasn’t particularly showy. I thoght your type made more of a display.” “The séance isn’t over,” Low said firmly. “Teach, is he here?” “No,” Ed said decisively, feeling off-balance. He couldn’t feel that energy anymore. Had the spirit pushed him out of the borderland? That had never happened before. Ed glanced around uneasily, scanning his eyes across the group at the table. They were all exactly as expected. And Izzy was still standing behind Low, exactly as normal and not slipped at all, and- What the fuck. Izzy was staring at a corner of the room, looking like he’d seen a ghost of his own. Ed followed his gaze over, and swore under his breath. Because he was seeing a ghost. There was someone there. There was a young boy standing in the corner by the fireplace, and he sure as fuck wasn’t alive. “Teach?” Low demanded and Ed didn’t know why he was so fucking insistent, why his voice was so sharp when everyone else just seemed confused
