This is 100% incorrect. Law of gross tonnage is that because of physics, heavier vessels are less able to slow down/turn effectively. Smaller, more nimble vessels have an unspoken requirement to take caution.

Essentially they used inconsistent widths for the boards they used to glue-up the table top, resulting in a terribly mismatched appearance beyond the normal you would get in a large hardwood table top.
It's exacerbated by a super-thin section right where the topper sections join. See pic
