It's a system that's easily abused. Kids taken away from those on government assistance and placed with friends/family of the social workers taking them away.

I've worked in a foster care-adjacent field for well over a decade. One thing I was very, very surprised about is that foster parents are paid multiple times per kid what a parent would make on welfare.
In rural areas? The same social workers taking kids away are supervising where they are place.
