would mean that those specialists and their practices wouldn't have to deal with as much overhead as they try to cater to each possible diagnosis. They could utilize smaller facilities, have more interpersonal care with specific patients, and would be free of the burdens of huge operating costs.

This seems to me to be the clearest 'middle-ground' between the two opposing arguments. There would exist a baseline of health in the US, adjustable to suit the needs of the people, and business could still take place in the private specialty marketplace. This would enable the government to serve

I've always hoped for a system similar to that of public education--where there exists a baseline of care for everyone, as with literacy. Private hospitals (schools, in this analogy) would still exist and be used for more specialized, particular aid, and insurance could be used for those times
