In probability theory, a Borel set is any element of the smallest σ-algebra containing all open subsets of ℝ.
This structure comes before probability.

The most important number in winter is 23.44°.
Happy winter solstice. (A day late for math Monday)

#MathMonday Today is the birthday of János Bolyai (b. Dec 15, 1802), one of the founders of non-Euclidean geometry. Bolyai showed that by rethinking Euclid’s parallel postulate, you can create a whole new geometry

Geometry isn’t just lines and angles, it’s about questioning

Working on new pieces for CognitiveMLStudio. I love how the history of understanding cognition keeps echoing through ML and AI. Many of the same questions now with math and better machines.

Without theory, we’d have no foundation for why things work in ML.
It explains:
• Why adding more features doesn’t help (curse of dim)
• Why overfitting happens & how regularization helps
• Why stochastic gradient descent converges at all

Theory makes progress sustainable.

Math Friday - Why eigenvalues matter in ML:
• Av=λv picks invariant directions
• det⁡(A−λI)=0 defines them

Where you see it: PCA for dimensionality, spectral clustering, graph Laplacians, covariance structure, and stability of iterative methods.

Data Science asks why.
AI engineer asks how.
Different roles. Different strengths. Both are essential for building AI that works in the real world.

Today I'm reminded of the straw man fallacy: if your argument rests on a false premise, you're not arguing with me, you're debating your own fiction.
