The best scaffolding is like training wheels. The wheels have to be removed, and the bike rider has to do it with courage and determination until it becomes . . . Dare I say it? Like riding a bike. Some may forget this important part. We need our students to be able to read sophisticated text.

More students will be excited about the content and it will be more of a deep dive vs a literary hostage situation. Genuine enthusiasm and the right scaffolding to support the understanding will give students the tools and confidence.

This is why variety of choice is so important - for both student and teacher. Different genres with just the right scaffolding. Give me Hawthorne and I’m like I get why it’s important but meh. Give me Hamlet, Gatsby, ‘84, or Crucible, and I’ll teach the hell out of ‘em. The passion is the key.

This idea of oral literacy is important and one way to experience whole texts. It’s also important that the whole text is experienced — for a number of reasons including larger context. Also, I think of cultures that honor the oral traditions. They are not working with excerpts ie old epic poems.

I remember. Checking the mailbox more regularly and having to wait in line to use the few phones in teacher workroom. Important memos had to be read, signed, and delivered to the next person in the department. More in person meetings. Of course, not spending endless hours sitting at the computer.

Elements of a specific time like Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby. Still some give us time to think about a not too distant future like Orwell’s 1984. Skills that come with Socratic Seminar and deep analytical connection help us think on a different level. What does it mean to be human? Art & science.

Some books alert to political climate like Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Some make societal change like The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Some teach us about friendship, care, and saying good bye like EB White’s Charlotte’s Webb. Sometimes beautiful language with symbolism marries the important . . .

To me and what I share with my students is the layers of meaning and the depth of understanding. The books I consider to be classics are books in which I make a new discovery and find a fresh a-ha. The stories of human beings and the times in which we’ve lived. Theme spans across culture and time.
