President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that Iran attacked a U.S. air base in Qatar in retaliation for America’s weekend strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, but he took a notably conciliatory tone toward Tehran in his announcement. In a post on Truth Social, Trump thanked Iran for giving the U.S. early notice of the strike, which he said “made it possible for no lives to be lost” on either the U.S. or Qatar side — though he also derided Iran’s missile attack as a “weak response.” Trump added that “hardly any damage was done,” with 13 missiles intercepted and one ignored “because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction.” Trump’s post suggests a desire on the side of the U.S. to tamp down tensions with Iran and avoid getting embroiled in a wider Middle East war. “Most importantly, they’ve gotten it all out of their ‘system,’ and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE,” Trump wrote. “CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!” Trump added in a separate post several minutes later.

The incident occurred Wednesday around 11 p.m. local time at the Massey’s Testing Center in Texas. SpaceX said all personnel were safe and that there were no hazards to residents, but still asked people not to approach the area.  It isn’t clear what caused the explosion but SpaceX blamed a “major anomaly.” Starships have exploded before, and the Elon Musk-owned company tends to emphasize the lessons learned from failed launches—lessons that will ultimately help the company perfect its space operations.
