Lough Carra Life Project Manager Ann Marie Meaney hits the nail on the head here 👇

Imagine what could be achieved for rivers and lakes across Ireland with more investment in water quality.

The shocking list of chemicals and treatments that are allowed to be used in so called 'organic' salmon from fish farms in Ireland highlighted by SWAN Marine & Coastal Policy Officer at the @salmonwatchireland.bsky.social conference.

At @salmonwatchireland.bsky.social conference hearing how protected area environmental assessments for fish farms must now consider the significant negative effects of sea lice from fish farms on wild salmon found in recent 2025 research paper.

Celebrating #WorldRiversDay with this beautiful old Irish proverb. When was the last time you listened to your local river? 💙🐟

Until this pollution drops the rivers, estuaries and coastal waters affected will remain unhealthy so stronger measures are needed to greatly bring the nitrogen pollution levels down. This must be done for the people and the wildlife affected by the pollution in their waters.
September 18, 2025 at 11:22 AM
As you can see, the nitrogen pollution in the east, south east & south (purple) is way over the limit for river health and often over the limit for marine health. There is no indication in the recent data that actions made by the Govt are bringing the pollution below the limits.
September 18, 2025 at 11:22 AM
These areas are where the most intensive dairy & most derogation farms are. The cream dotted line shows the limit of nitrogen pollution before the coastal waters in these catchments become unhealthy, and the black line shows the limit before the rivers in the areas are unhealthy.
September 18, 2025 at 11:22 AM
The purple dots on the graph show the amount of nitrogen pollution found in the monitoring points on catchments that require reductions. As you can see from the map, these are in the east, south east and south of the country.

Until we know these drivers, we can't read too much into what is happening to cause the fluctuations. However, this graph in the report shows us the important information we need to know when considering nitrate pollution...
September 18, 2025 at 11:22 AM
An EPA report has indicated that nitrogen levels have increased 16% in the first 6 months of 2025 and these are 'reasonable predictors' for the year. However, older reports showed there was a decrease of 10% in 2024, so what can we take from this? 🧵

Congratulations to SWAN member, the Environmental Forum, who are celebrating their 30th Anniversary today. 🥳

In that time they have done outstanding work to protect and restore our rivers, lakes, and seas in Ireland. 👏🌊

Here's to many more years! 💪

🌍✍️ Nearly 200,000 messages sent to the EU in just 10 days: hands off our environmental laws. Citizens won’t let profit come before people + planet.

Come help to spell out SAVE OUR SPRAT in giant letters for a drone shot in Beicin in Bantry this Sunday at 1pm and enjoy a great David Attenborough film too. Organised by the @saveoursprat.bsky.social  campaign.

EU nature laws are some of the best protections we have for Ireland’s rivers, lakes, seas and wildlife. But the European Commission is trying to dismantle these laws right now.

Have your say before 10 Sept and tell them #HandsOffNature!

The European Commission is quietly trying to dismantle the laws that safeguard what we cherish most: our nature.

Tell them loud and clear to keep their #HandsOffNature 🙅

And,as you can see from this map, Ireland has some of the highest wetland loss and also the highest nitrogen surplus in Europe.

Good news! 🥳

From Oct '26, trawling activity by fishing vessels over 18m will be banned within 6 miles of shore.

A huge win for conservation & small-scale fishers in Ireland. People power works - over 94% of submissions supported this outcome.

Existing EU water laws help hundreds of millions get clean, healthy water

25 years on, the Water Framework Directive remains a modern, powerful tool - and must keep protecting our waters for years to come

The European Commission has told the Government that environmental assessments will be needed on farms if the nitrates derogation is to be retained.

Good to see drop in nitrogen levels last year BUT still WAY too high, especially in SE.

Nearly 2 in every 5 river monitoring stations showed concentrations at levels that impact ecological health.

➕ increase in estuarine & coastal waters with unsatisfactory levels.

Rivers across Europe are heavily broken up by barriers like dams and weirs

With around 1.2 million in place, these structures massively disrupt biodiversity and threaten healthy waters 💦

But with the Nature Restoration Law, that’s about to change - see how ⬇️
