Qatar urges restraint amid rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar released a statement on Sunday, expressing concern over the rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and urging both countries to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy. According to a report by Pakistan’s news organisation DAWN, the Afghan Taliban and affiliated militants launched an attack from the Afghan side of the border, killing at least 23 Pakistani troops and injuring 29 others, as per Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

UN welcomes ratification of ocean biodiversity protection agreement UN experts welcomed on Thursday the ratification of the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), first adopted on 19 June 2023. This ratification is a significant advancement in the conservation of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change both hailed the ratification of the agreement by 69 States, describing it as a historic step for the protection of the high seas and the deep seabed.

China gives up WTO developing-country status as tariff tensions linger The US has long argued China should give up the developing-country status because it is the world’s second-largest economy. China has said it would no longer seek the special treatment given to developing countries in World Trade Organization agreements — a change long demanded by the United States. Commerce Ministry officials said on Wednesday the move was an attempt to boost the global trading system at a time when it is under threat from tariff wars and protectionist moves by individual countries to restrict imports.
