Every situation is obviously different, fluid, and needs its own risk assessment to determine the safest response, but better to be prepared and not need something than to be unable to respond how you wish because you can’t safely do so.

This isn’t to suggest everyone should feel confident / ok responding physically to groups of fascists. But being able to at least conceal your identity when needed can help you stay more safe in all ways, like taking photos to help with identification, or taking down banners and other propaganda.
