But it's also absolutely devastating for farm owners and workers who have to witness thousands of chickens under their care drop dead — and know any remaining birds must be slaughtered.

I interviewed recently terminated USDA workers and industry representatives who fear that U.S. farmers — and American consumers — will ultimately pay the cost.
