Yes, Dustin, thank you so much for posting these. I too miss walking on West Cliff, especially walking over to Steamers. Santa Cruz is one of those places where I'm grateful I was able to live, even if it was just for a while. Cheers from France (our new home)

Well, originally both kanas were derived from kanji, so I can see why someone might try to interpret them that way.

Yes, it is katakana. The characters are pronounced: チャ "cha" (chi + small ya), ツ (small tsu following indicates a "stop") ピー "pee" like the letter P in english (pi + vowel sound doubling indicator) so "cha pee"
