PS I don't really enjoy Garner's reviews most of the time, and he dances around saying how bad it is, but this was correct about the book, if not the world, in the NYT:
There is no one to root for, morally, in “Flesh.” You wonder if perhaps the plot will come down, to borrow the title of an Anthony Powell novel, to a question of upbringing. But extremes meet here: Rich and poor seem equally empty and meretricious. We are living in a world that lacks moral champions, and Szalay’s book makes you feel their absence like a physical ache.

Je n'ai pas connu Yolanda Martinez autant que je l'aurais souhaité. Quand l'apocalypse avait frappé Yolanda, son dévouement à ses patients n'avait pas vacillé une seconde. Elle avait le rire facile, souriait souvent. Et même si elle était aussie terrifiée que nous autres, elle fit face à une force qu'elle savait n'avoir aucune chance de contenir. Elle avait été une femme de valeur toute sa vie. Et c'est en demme de valeur qu'elle mourut.

New backyard cat showed up a week ago, then disappeared, then reappeared, all scruffy. We are feeding Scruffy Belle/Beau in hopes of trap training them and getting them looked at by a vet early next week. Meanwhile, the Neighbor Cats™ are side-eyeing SB, and our own cat is RATHER unhappy.

Book group chose Dungeon Crawler Carl for this month. "Not available on Libby," someone said. I looked & found it at one of my libraries, & I was pleased. Put it on hold; hold came through yesterday. Took me a hot minute to realize a small issue.

And here are the three tuxedo cats/kittens there now, along with cow kitten Theo, brother to the smallest tuxedo kitten.
Tuxedo cats are Amelia (about a year, shy, very sweet), Augustus (3 years old, shiny, purry, huge), and small boy Alvin, 5 months old, brother of the cow kitten on the lap.

Anyway, I'm in Eugene, so here's a photo from tonight's fun and goofy Bright Parade.

First grey is Manolo, about 4.5 months old, girly.
Black kitty is Jessica A. Watkins, almost a year. My FAVE.

My fave is Milk Street’s Zucchini with Gochujang and Scallions. It’s paywalled online, but here you go. I tried to translate some things to metric in the alt-text. #recipe
Charred Zucchini with Gochujang and Scallions Hobak muchim is a Korean side dish of seasoned sliced zucchini. In this boldly flavorful—yet ultra-simple—version, the charred bitter notes and subtle sweetness of the zucchini (or yellow summer squash) are a perfect match for the spicy, pungent, sesame-fragrant, salty-sweet dressing that coats the ... … zucchini after broiling. When shopping, look for medium-size zucchini (ones that weigh about 8 oz each) so the slices aren’t too small and numerous nor too large and few. Gochujang is an umami-packed Korean hot pepper paste; look for it in the international aisle of most supermarkets or in Asian grocery stores. Note that we use seasoned rice vinegar here, as it’s an easy one-ingredient way to incorporate acidity, sweetness and salt. START TO FINISH: 35 MINUTES Servings: 4 3 medium (1 1/2 pounds total; ~.7 kg) zucchini or yellow summer squash, or a combination, sliced into 1/4-1/2-inch (.64-1.27-cm)-thick rounds 1 Tablespoon grapeseed or other neutral oil Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2-3 Tablespoons gochujang 3 Tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar 2 Tablespoons toasted sesame oil 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger 1 medium garlic clove, finely grated 4 scallions, thinly sliced on the diagonal *Don’t forget to rotate the baking sheet about halway through broiling. This helps ensure that the zucchini browns evenly, especially if your oven has hot spots, as many do. Be sure to allow the zucchini to cool for 5-10 minutes after broiling. During this time, the slices release some liquid that would otherwise dilute the dressing. 1. Heat the broiler with a rack about 4 inches (10 cm) from the element. Set a wire rack in a broiler-safe rimmed baking sheet. In a large bowl, toss the zucchini with the neutral oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Arrange the slices on the prepared rack in a single layer; reserve the bowl. Broil until the tops are well charred, 7-9 minutes, rotating the baking sheet about halfway through. Meanwhile, in the reserved bowl, whisk together the gochujang, vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and scallions. 2. When the zucchini is done, let it cool on the rack for 5-10 minutes. Transfer the slices to the bowl and toss gently until evenly coated. Taste and season with salt and pepper, then transfer to a serving dish. Serve warm or at room temperature. *Optional garnish*: Toasted sesame seeds

We had a hot water heater issue, & I'm cleaning out boxes of my old schoolwork, which my mom carefully saved, and then I carefully moved to Oregon for some reason.
