I agree - Have you read the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey? No unicorns, but there are horse-like companions.
They fight lots of evil and have some traumatic experiences, but it usually comes out fine at the end.

I agree! Have you read the Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey? They are similar, but have companion horse-like beings. There are lots of evil things to fight, but it mostly turns out well.
