Many years ago at school I mocked the idea of a certain dull-sounding career path, only for my teacher to sternly remind me that ‘every subject is interesting to someone’. That line has stuck in my head ever since.

Interestingly, when I speak to GP practices about where their biggest pressures are in terms of staff retention (a subject that I deliver training on), 9 times out of 10 it’s the receptionists rather than the GPs.

It’s extremely rare that a pre-employment health assessment leads to withdrawal of a job offer. I’ve only had it happen a couple of times in 20 years of HR when the individual had a disability which completely prevented them from carrying out the job in question safely.

Nothing sinister Alan. It’s pretty standard in many UK industries - usually involves nothing more than a health questionnaire and occasionally a phone call with occupational health. The Equality Act requires employers to consider reasonable adjustments for long-term health conditions.
