One of the best parts of #BAVS2025 (other than the stellar, thought provoking papers) was witnessing @hosmeriana.bsky.social ‘s reaction to her first Punch & Judy show complete with sausage-stealing crocodiles 🐊

The closing Q&A to @hosmeriana.bsky.social and I’s ‘The Artist as Art Historian’ panel — a wonderful end to a super productive @forarthistory.org.uk conference at the University of York! Thank you to all our brilliant speakers and attendees 💕

Working on an article today about how we might cast this Goupil Poster from 1896 as a visual manifestation of Pre-Raphaelitism as a cult object at the close of the century. Shout at me if there’s any readings on artistic chromolithographic posters I need to be sure not to miss!

My final chapter focused on modern evocations of the "Pre-Raphaelite", looking at high-fashion hair/makeup design + interest in and influence of Pre-Raph model Fanny Eaton + #preraphaelite as an internet aesthetic + queer readings + postfeminism. Essentially why Pre-Raphaelitism is relevent today!

I also explored parodic illustrations as a tool for the study of the reception and contemporary understanding of the "Pre-Raphaelite". Key case studies included Sandys's drawing 'A Nightmare' (1857), Waring's 'Pre-Raffaelleite Chorus' (1857) + Claxton's 'Choice of Paris' (1860-2).

My doctoral thesis looked at the origins and evolution of the term "Pre-Raphaelite" from 1848 to 2024. As part of this work, I uncovered a new source that rewrites the history of the PRB and their "secret" name. This discovery was published in Burlington here: www.burlington.org.uk/archive/back...

I have published the first extensive deep-dive into the life and career of the Belgian-British artist Anna Alma-Tadema (daughter of Victorian artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema). Hoping to do more work on this family soon. Check out my article in the British Art Journal: www.jstor.org/stable/48736...
