Lovely last day at #NCTE25, with keynote speaker Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of BRAIDING SWEETGRASS. Her new book BUD FINDS HER GIFT, illustrated by Naomi Stoop and published by @allidabooks.bsky.social, is about the power of gratitude. I hope that you are able to gift it to someone you love.

One of the #KidLit books I’m really looking forward to is @amberanovak.bsky.social's THE HULA PAINTED FROG, about an amphibian once thought to be
extinct. You can read more about her process here, and on the #PBMix26 Instagram.

For the #KidLit community! Tomorrow (10/5) is the last day to register for the incredible @scbwirockymtn.bsky.social conference, 10/18-19 near Denver, CO. Tracks for illustrators, writing PBs, writing MG & YA, and marketing, for both emerging and well-published creators.

For the #NF #KidLit creators: The first session today for the @scbwi.bsky.social University’s Nonfiction Series class with Lesa Cline Ransom was fabulous, with lots of insights into creative (often expository) NF. It’s recorded, and there’s still time to sign up for the full series.

#KidLit Inspo! With thanks to PBMix’26, I’m sharing some of the inspiration behind my book: DAWN CHORUS: Protecting Birdsong Around the World. If you’ve ever been awakened early (too early?!) on a spring morning by birdsong, you’ve heard the dawn chorus.

This is a Save-the-Date for #Kidlit #NF creators: I was fortunate to attend the first Ninja Experience Revision Retreat this year. It was truly fabulous — and they are doing it again next June! The retreat center at Prairiewoods in Iowa was an oasis of birdsong and sustainability. Inspiring.

So thrilled that my #bookclub will be reading @lauraresau.bsky.social's debut adult novel, THE ALCHEMY OF FLOWERS—it is getting rave reviews prior to its release on 7/29! Our group started as a mother- daughter book club, and Laura spoke to our group nearly two decades ago.

Enjoying @thewritingbarn.bsky.social's Industry Engagement Day — learning so much about what makes a great pitch and what things specific agents and editors gravitate to (and avoid!), on topics as diverse as pickles, ballet and vampires! #WBIE

I was thrilled when Estelle Nadel’s graphic novel THE GIRL WHO SANG, illustrated by Sammy Savos, won ALA honors for both Sibert (nonfiction) and Sydney Tailor (Jewish experience). Estelle, a Holocaust survivor and Denverite, died this fall—but had seen the first author copies of her book. #kidlit

Book Rec! One of my favorite #NFMG reads this year—Ann Bausum’s THE BARD AND THE BOOK, illustrated by @martasevillabdn.bsky.social Even my non-kidlit reading husband loved it! This one is fun and funny and we learned so much about making books.

If you write MG, you should know of Greg Pattridge and his blog Always in the Middle, with a “Marvelous Middle Grade Monday” review compilation. Reading those reviews provides a great overview of the current market and can inform mentor text and comp title lists. gpattridge.com/2024/11/18/m...

I’m totally intrigued by Lawrence Weinstein’s book and idea: Our use of grammar correlated to our personality—so can changing the way we use grammar change how we live our lives? I’ll keep you posted on my experiment!

Each year, SCBWI Nebraska offers 8-month-long workshops on some aspect of KidLit writing, with submission opportunities afterwards. This workshop that led to a publisher for my NF PB—so I highly recommend their programs! This year, they are focusing on novels.

It’s Banned Book Week: 10/1-7. These books need support year-round, but let’s use comments to shine light on recently published and banned KidLit works. Here’s one: Lily Williams’ @lwbean.bksy.social and Karen Schneemann’s GO WITH THE FLOW. The sequel, also likely to be banned, is out this month.

I read J.E. Thomas’s CONTROL FREAKS this week, and loved it! It’s one of those books I keep picking up after finishing, turning to a random page, and enjoying that section all over again. A MG told in alternating POVs (including those of adults!), it builds empathy for all of the characters.
