On Sunday @amandarykoff.bsky.social went to see “Obama the Musical” at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, and I’m so glad we did! The show runs Wednesday through Sunday, now through June 22. Get your tickets, LA! I will probably see it again because it sparked such joy.

This is a great piece of writing on the fractured media and entertainment industry that gave rise to the new American authoritarianism. AI, the weakening of unions, and a desperate search for community and storytelling, even the lame kind. Enshittification all around

When the leader of the US is trying to destroy the stability that his predecessor created, and the media ecosystem that created him treats him like he is some quirky genius, it helps to read other countries’ economic news coverage. Less simpering, more facts

And in that spirit, here was one of the fun signs from the weekend’s Tesla Takedown protests in Los Angeles:

Since Lyle Fass doesn’t appear to be on Bluesky yet, I’m sharing his Threads post from a couple of days ago about the value of ridicule in fighting authoritarianism:

One of my favorite small things about this whole horrible timeline is that @hcrichardson.bsky.social pronounced it "doggy" on her podcast each day. Takes away some of the stupid horror and gives it a name that sounds like it wearing the cone of shame

Over at one of the Bad Places, where the billionaire boy owner has recently announced that there is no more fact-checking, I just got “fact-checked” for posting something that was a fact. So many ways to gaslight and hold two different standards for truth—one for MAGA, one for pro-democracy people

Here is a nice photo of the United States Capitol just before Congress certifies the election of the 47th president, and notice the absence of his opponent's supporters climbing the building, assaulting cops, and carrying bear spray, zip ties, and Confederate flags. No assaults on cops, either.

You know how to tell that I'm a Democrat and not MAGA? This week when I visited the newly elected Congress Members and Senators, I brought the staff and security personnel See's candies rather than, say... zip ties and bear spray.

Yesterday I spent a wonderful afternoon at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. I think it's my favorite museum in America. Heading into another lawless American strongman regime in a couple of weeks, this image of Nixon was particularly powerful

Happy publication day to my favorite American historian @hcrichardson.bsky.social !

Bought three copies of DEMOCRACY AWAKENING and cannot wait to share with a couple of friends. Thank you for your work for our country and future, and looking forward to hearing you speak next week in Los Angeles!

On the road near Tanglewood in Stockbridge, Mass. I would love to know the story of this rock painted like a shark—whose brilliant idea was this, and who is the painter who keeps it looking sharky?

The Keith Haring exhibit at The Broad in Los Angeles is incredible. Go see it if you can.
