We have never flown a flag before. But this year (for some reason) we are feeling unduly patriotic. My hubby is FN. So we will be flying this gorgeous version to express that we are true patriots to our home on Native Land.

Beautiful day off. Stopped at Coombs to buy picnic foods. Picnicked at Cameron Lake then drove to Port Alberni.

For my 70th birthday our favourite restaurant pastry chef made me my favourite dessert... a Pavlov Cake!!!

70 is GREAT so far!!!

Day 20... Difficult decision. I choose this painting because EJ Hughes lived & died in #CowichanValley and I do like his work #canadianArt #canada
There is a brightness and clarity to EJ Hughes Tugboats at Ladysmith Harbour that is almost like the artwork in a children's picturebook. In the foreground there is a small line of foamy surf between two dark points of land in front of a shiny dark expanse of water. Taking up almost half the right side of the painting is a tug boat facing right. The hull and gunnel are black with a thick white rubrail between. The cabins are bright orange. Above the cabins there is a white wheel house at the front. Behind it black smoke towers out of its black smokestack. Behind that a lifeboat is secured above the last cabin. Behind the boat is a wake. The tugboat pulls a log boom. There are several booms behind the tug. A man in a red jacket blue trousers and black cap stands on the boom guiding it by prodding the other boom with a stout stick. A smaller tugboat in back with a single yellow cabin is darting around tying the booms off. Behind and above all the activity in the harbour is a row of shrubbery. Mounting above the shrubbery is a line of grey rocks. Uphill deciduous and evergreen trees mound above the rocks and above them top and centre is an area that has been logged with just a few brancheless leafless trunks left standing. Above it all is a deep teal blue sky.

Day 19
Summer by Henri Rousseau captures the summer as I know it, here on Vancouver Island. It is a lush green landscape with evergreen and deciduous trees in the foreground the midground and the background. This covers a large area. There are patches of cream and green on the ground in the foreground and midground suggesting light and shadow. The foreground feels like a park. The background feels like a farmer's field. On the right hand side taking up a quarter of the painting is parklike...an angled patch of cultivated grass in front of a angled pathway in front of an angled fence and trees. Mid right near the centre of the midground just left of an ancient tree there is a child facing us and a woman with her back to us turned slightly to the left carrying a milk can in her left hand. Both are wearing white blouses black vests and long red skirts. The woman also wears a white scarf on her head. Left of them and just left of the centre of the painting, a white pony stands in profile facing left. Left and slightly in front of the pony a black scottish terrior faces the woman and child. Two tall lush trees arching gracefully to the left stand to the left and slightly behind this group. A cow another tree and another cow are slightly behind and to the left. Then on the far left of the painting, deeper into the midground of the painting, there is a second woman facing us (and the other woman). She is wearing a white blouse black vest black skirt white apron and white scarf pointing to the left. All of these figures take up the entire midground of the painting. Molly Rows her Pear Shaped Boat by Laurel Hibbert is a joyful and whimsical painting, painted in a sort of quebecois folk style. We look into the cream coloured Pear Shaped lapstrake dingy from above and see Molly facing us, dressed in a 40s style black longsleeved dress and green and brown sweater sprawled upon the seat holding an oar in each hand upturned head with bobbed brown hair singingly gustily at the seagulls flying above her righthand side while a swan stands at the stern of the dingy, head over the right side of the boat. This painting fills me with joy. I sing at seagulls too!

From an elevated viewpoint we look down on a courtyard surrounded by buildings on three sides. In the courtyard some 200 children are arranged in small groups in different parts of the courtyard playing 90 different games. This is Children's Games painted by Pieter Breugel in 1560. It is teeming with life in fascinating detail and looking at it offers hours of amusement.

Day 16
The bold colours of Matisse's The Dessert: Harmony in Red are arresting . More than 3/4 of this painting are a deep dark vibrant red. The scene is a dining room. The walls and table cloth are all the same red. Way to the right a red haired maid in black victorian top and a white apron arranges fruit in a stemmed platter. On the left, with its left side out of the painting, there is a chair with a woven straw seat, facing us. Behind the chair and table taking up perhaps a third of the top half of the painting we see the right side of a window looking out into a green garden with trees and flowers. In the distance beyond the garden off the the left is a pink building. On the table there are several small platters a teapot a vase of flowers as well as fruits. But they are all very small hardly noticeable compared to the massive red presence. On the walls and tablecloth there are decorative blue floral patterns and arabesques. They seem to float and are purely decorative. This is a shocking painting not just because of the red but also because of the flatness of the walls and the tables compared with the perspective of the chair and the scene outside the window all on the left hand 1/4 of the painting.

Day 15
In this painting a barefooted woman sits in profile on the ground. She takes up the whole painting vertically and over half the right hand side of the painting. In front of her are three pots..a yellow one a brown and a blue pot. Behind her a very square flat adobe dwelling extends off both sides of the painting and covers the entire background except a horizontal strip at the very top of one toned bright blue and a monotone patch of brown ground the woman and pots sit on. Just below the top of the adobe hut in a vertical line we see seven wooden roof pegs. We look directly at the furthest right peg. They progress to the furthest left which is in total profile. Between the first two pegs on the right, leaning against the adobe hut, an old wooden style ladder extends from behind the woman to above the painting. In the center below the pegs blocked from our sight by the woman, a small portion of a darkened doorway leads into the adobe building. This is a flat primitive painting. I love the boldness and simplicity of the shapes and brushstokes of Frances Hatfield's Woman with Pots. Few women paint with such boldness. It is flat and square. The colours are subdued. Beiges browns light teal blue, light violet, light green. My eye lingers on the small details like the blue glint of her downward gazing eye and the blue sheen on her pitch black braided hair. I find this a very satisfying painting. It hangs on my bedroom wall!

Day 14
I love how Seurat sees light and colour. His images are emotionally satisfying like the impressionists but his technique draws from the scientific discoveries of his day. This painting is Peasant With Hoe. In the center the peasant in a white shirt yellow hat and faded blue trousers is at work in a field of little orange rose and green splotches. If one blurs one's eyes one justs sees a brownish patch. Behind the patch there is a haystack on the right and a hedge on the left. Just to the left of the Peasant's head there is the trunk of a tall tree tilted left. The tree and the peasant cast shadows to the right. When I soften my focus the coloured objects are solid colours but with full focus each object consists of dots or splotches of many colours. Is Seurat the father of pixellation?
