Yesterday: Witchcraft workshop (together with @allisonlemley.bsky.social and @femsista.bsky.social). And yes, students got tiny cauldrons with sweets. A long day, but really productive and fun!

Lots of familiar BritCult faces at the fantastic "The Company We Keep" workshop in Frankfurt (sponsored by Britcult!). The association's president, 2 members of the advisory committee, one of the organisers of #BritCult2025, and the unimpressed guy in the middle are looking forward to #BritCult2025!

Das könnte ich wahrscheinlich schaffen wenn ich ganz, ganz schnell laufe.

Complaining about workload, looking forward to a conference - the eternal cycle of academic life. Working on a fungal paper for "The Company We Keep - Figurations, Narratives, and Practices of Co-Living in Common Spaces" (Frankfurt University, 31 October - 01 November).

Look how pretty she is! I received my author copies of /Practices & Narratives of Early Modern Piracy/ today (officially published by @amsterdamupress.bsky.social on Monday). Will post more about individual chapters (including my own) next week - in the meantime, do ask your library to order a copy!

Goodbye #Anglistiktag2025, it was a pleasure.

Things are getting real! The website for #britcult2025 has gone live: www.britcult.de/conference20.... Check out our exciting programme, register until October 20, then join us for a 3-day conference on the Re-Orientation of Gender (Studies) in the 21st century. #AcademicConference #GenderStudies

Trying to buy myself a couple of working hours by bribing 9yo with a massive slice of cake and 2 Percy Jackson books (not pictured). People who tell you they would never bribe their kids are liars, don't trust them.

I can definitely see a shrimp in my frothed milk - a Northern German latte art specialty, perhaps? 9yo says it's a rat, though. 🦐 or 🐀?

So the most recent iteration of academic phishing emails are fake awards for random articles? Hilarious!

Out of Office - our family holiday library is located under the stairs, what's not to love.

Asking students for main take-aways from a class in the last week of term: never gets old. #AcademicTeaching

Very cool activity prepared by a student yesterday: the other students had to allocate quotes to Great Expectations and Mister Pip. Great fun!

Thanks to everyone who came, to Kai Nonnenmacher for the generous introduction, to everyone who stayed for the reception. Extra shout-out to those who brought presents (I'm kidding, mostly). 2/2

So this happened: inaugural lecture on female pirates, done! I had great fun talking about Bonny & Read and strategies of queering in contemporary biofictions. "Is very good at pointing at pirates" should probably go on my resume from now on. 1/2

Had a fantastic two days at "The Problem of Piracy IV" in Exeter - what a wonderfully communicative interdisciplinary network this is! Thanks for having me and listening to me ramble about Anne Bonny and Mary Read in contemporary fiction.

Went to London, found a bear! We will ignore that my train was cancelled (feels like DB, basically) because it's definitely not Paddington's fault. On my way to Exeter now (hopefully).

Tfw that book project that was almost derailed by the pandemic and its aftermath (and the German academic job market) finally has a cover: Practices & Narratives of Early Modern Piracy, forthc. this August with Amsterdam University Press 🏴‍☠️
