Our new piece in @ca.theconversation.com! Our research found that even organic farmers motivated by social justice are having trouble making concrete job quality improvements for hired workers. Good jobs are crucial for a resilient food system, but we need policy supports to make it a reality.

Our op-ed is out today in @thetyee.ca ! Protecting workers from the risks of extreme heat isn’t a threat to affordable food. It’s key to ensuring food security with hotter summers to come. BC should update its regulations in line with US states taking the lead, like WA, OR & CO.
Farmworkers work long hours in the blistering heat.

Extreme heat can also make crops ripen more quickly, leading employers to pressure workers to harvest more quickly and take fewer breaks, all at the expense of their well-being.

Many associate organic with sustainability, including social aspects. But as we show in our new paper, organic standards in MX, US & CA only mention social aspects in principle, and they are barely mentioned at all.
