Perhaps you can see the Begg’n Strip she was given. She only eats treats on the back deck so she now needs to carry it a mile, a mile of no sniffing, no meeting my eyes in case I take it. Fast walk today!

For several weeks, Grace has taken over the dog bed. Dory has come in, looked at me reproachfully, left the room. This morning, she settled on the bed. And although Grace gave her the LOOK, they both settled into a nap.

Abandoned the first frosty night, this nest which appeared almost overnight is rapidly degrading. The unfolding layers fascinate.

"Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves” ~ Humbert Wolfe And, there is no Japanese maple in the neighborhood. Wonder how far it travelled…

Family lived here for 70 years. Listed at $650,000, sold at $803,000. Now a hole in the ground, destined to be another multimillion dollar soulless house.

Never did I think I would be discussing differences, similarities among concubines, mistresses, ladies of the night at our senior center book group, but such are the books we’re reading! 8 of us, spirited discussion, and an interesting read. Consensus 4/5.

My pinecone perseveres. “What kind of people do they think we are? Is it possible they do not realize that we shall never cease to persevere against them until they have been taught a lesson which they and the world will never forget?” Winston Churchill

I fell into a Nancy Pearl hole compliments of the Captive Reader and discovered this. If you grew up reading beneath the covers by flashlight, addicted to books by the Stratemeyer syndicate, this parody is for you, the aging characters, simple sentences, exuberant adjectives. 3.5/5

“Man is a creature who lives not upon bread alone, but primarily by catchwords.” Robert Louis Stevenson. Finally warm enough to walk to the river without fearing frostbite for Dory. Good to stand quiet with nature to combat the political noise.

“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Martin Luther King, Jr. Simply can’t take the Mississippi out of the dog! She wouldn’t turn right to the river but rather pulled left around the block to home. Caught a little sunrise.

“Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder.” -
George Washington. As we got to the top of the park, hunters boomed in the marsh and the geese behind the Audubon arose with great honking and headed up river, an amazing sight.

“Now it’s your turn to stand guard. May you all be the keeper of the flame. May you keep the faith. I love America. You love it, too.” - President Biden.

“A single twig breaks, but the bundle of twigs is strong.”- Tecumseh. After watching the behavior of the nominee and Republican Senators yesterday, I am truly afraid the bundle will not hold.💔

“The trouble with lying and deceiving is that their efficiency depends entirely upon a clear notion of the truth that the liar and deceiver wishes to hide.” Hannah Arendt

“The truth is that love smashes into your life like an ice floe, and even if your heart is built like the Titanic you go down.” Jeanette Winterson. Wind has subsided, but the cold leaches into the bones. Ice floes choke the river.

"We told the truth, we obeyed the law and we kept the peace." Mondale’s eulogy of Carter. 💔 3 swans among hundreds of geese I could hear several blocks away. Chunks of ice on a swiftly flowing tide.

“America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense human rights invented America.” Jimmy Carter. Dory several days ago. This morning‘s wind was so in her face she pulled left around every corner to home. Blessings on Carter’s family and prayers for California.

“We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.” Iris Murdoch. And they were floating along to join a large crowd nestled among the phragmites.

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Confucius. Simply release the Special Counsel’s report and trust that we can read it, recognize facts, and understand the truth.

“Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.” - Abraham Lincoln. Bitter, ice lining the shore, ducks and geese floating along river’s edge so loud!
January 6, 2025 at 1:34 PM
“There is a muscular energy in sunlight corresponding to the spiritual energy of wind.” Annie Dillard. The wind is relentless, branches are down, Christmas trees put out for collection are all over! Another memorial mass this morning, my sister-in-law’s mom.💔

‘Kind love & good wishes for a happy New Year to you all…’ Jane Austen For over two years, this pinecone from the giant pine next door has been hanging onto my Syringa reticulata. I want to be able to do the same, hanging on these next four years promising chaos.

“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” - Helen Keller. After a slide on black ice we bailed at dawn. Here’s after lunch by the clam shack, ducks resting with heads tucked.
