Most of France was frosty and shrouded in mist as we sped along to #Paris. Sun came out as we arrived. Time for some tea at La Maison Blanche, opposite Paris Gare du Nord. #france

Good morning Strasbourg. Bright but chilly morning. Last day of the tour. Parting company with my Swedish friends and taking the train to #Paris Est. Strasbourg station has an enormous glass extension in front of the old facade.

Chilly walk around town, a little last minute shopping, gawp at the enormous cathedral, then supper. Managed to get a bit lost on the way back to the hotel, but some very nice locals showed us the way.

Through the Gotthatd tunnel, paused in Luzern and changed direction, then on to Basel. Very quick change for train to Strasbourg. No time for photos of station. Again.

On the move again, after the wonderful Donizetti Festival in #Bergamo.
Train from Bergamo to Milan, then on to Basel. No time for station photos. So here's a random local train seen as we leave Milan on EC178. #italy

Not many pics today. Lovely morning concert featuring opera singers. Interesting hearing about Opera Rara's project of recording all #Donazetti's songs.
Then matinee of Il furioso nell'isola di S. Domingo. . Wonderful production with some moving moments and great singing.
Awful weather. #italy

A stroll by the lake after lunch, to examine the last train ferry on a lake in the world. Apparently. Then back to Bergamo on the bus in the rain.

The Tram Restaurant for lunch. Fabulous food. #italy

This morning we set off on the train to Palazzolo sull'Oglio. Then explored the town looking for the bus stop, where we waited a long time for the bus to lake Iseo.

Evening at the opera. First night of the #Donnizetti Festival. Very enjoyable performance of Caterina Cornaro, including a sort of parallel storyline. Intended to aid interpretation, I suppose, but a bit odd.
Quick bite to eat after. #italy #bergamo

Bergamo station, with students gathering to protest on a variety of issues, including the involvement of their universities in the war machine.
Hotel overlooks the station, and the restaurant serves a delicious pea risotto with courgette flowers and cheese. #italy

Time for a pre-prandial stroll down to the lake and war memorial. I assume those lights are a funicular railway.
November 13, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Final leg of the journey takes us to Como. Some lovely views on the way. All a but sleepy after the lunchtime beer.

Three trains this morning, including the Simplon tunnel and a lovely ride to Locarno.
Lunch in the sun. As usual I forgot to take photos until I'd eaten half of it.

Good morning Saint Maurice. It's a charming small town, with a remarkable theatre and apparently the longest functioning abbey in the western world.
The view from the bedroom window in the Hotel La Dent du Midi.

Wow. Great evening at the Theatre du Martolet in Saint Maurice. Some wonderful singing and a clever production of Gounod's Faust. Remarkable. Nice bonus that the bar was open after the show, with cast, musicians etc mingling with the audience. We sampled the very local wine.
