Sometimes not petty enough beaurocrat.
Current project posting pics from my great great grandmother's books to Bluesky every now and then.
From Stories About Cats by Elizabeth Surr, 1882. The subtitle seems to say this illustrates a story on page 161, but page 161 is actually a sad poem about a cat who fought a "savage dog" and lost.

Not very many pictures left in my great grandmother's book, Stories About Cats. This one illustrates a tale about a very tolerant cat.

Time once again for a picture from Mrs Surr's 1882 book Stories About Cats. This one illustrates a story about a mother cat who fought and killed a hawk who was attacking her kitten, losing an eye in the process. Victorians were squeamish about a lot of things but they weren't afraid of blood.

From Mrs. Surr's 1872 book, Stories About Cats, we meet this momma cat who nested with her kittens in the hollow of a tree and became friends with local farm children. She moved the kittens into their farm house moments ahead of a huge storm, proving that cats are smart about weather and stuff.

Victorians were suckers for a "devoted animal" story, and my great grandmother was quite happy to supply one. Here we see a cat mourning the death of a young friend, who passed away despite the numerous mice she brought to his bedside. From Stories About Cats, 1882

From Stories About Cats, 1882. The story Vicissitudes Return follows a cat whoso family moved house over her strenuous objections. She escaped enroute to the new place, made her way back to the old place, figured that the family was gone, then refound them at the new place.

Not by me personally, but I claim relative's right. My great great grandmother published a book called Stories About Cats in 1882, this is my favorite illustration in it

Another illustration from Mrs Surr's 1882 book, Stories About Cats. I feel like this artist knew what a cat looked like and knew what an urn looked like, but didn't quite nail the assignment of showing a cat on top of an urn.

The picture accompanied this poem (I've left off the last stanza but you should have had your fill of late Victorian goopiness by the end of the page
