like the clickbaity youtube titles and the grand moral pronouncements and nature of the it just being where everyone vents their most petty pet peeves does this thing where I'm constantly checking myself against millions of peoples standards

Don't need to read Oliver Twist in first person, but Lolita absolutely needed to be written that way.

just don't understand the debate at all. I feel like you match the POV to the needs of the story being told, not create a dictum on which is the "right" one for all story telling.

The complaint usually seems to be "I have read books written in first person that were poorly written" and like. well yeah. could say the same for any POV

Also recurrent opinion that first person is somehow juvenile, YA adjacent, or *new*. Think you'd have to have read maybe 4 books to think this. So of the most highly praised classics of all time were written in first person.

of a book is not you? You are their audience. The person they are telling a story to, just the same as in third person.

assumption that no one could be writing anything other than very plot driven genre fiction
