A step in the right direction! @consilium.europa.eu took a strong stand for health and environmental protection, and against careless deregulation. https://www.consilium.europa.eu/fr/press/press-releases/2025/11/05/council-agrees-position-to-simplify-requirements-for-chemical-products/

Our ocean is our life-support system but it’s under increasing threat. With COP30 in Brazil and the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement ahead, the world is at a decisive moment: we must move from promises to real action. ✊🌊

Last night, we raised €175,500 at The One Ocean Gala 2025, our annual charity event! 🩵🌊 Yesterday was even more special as we we celebrated Surfrider Europe's 35 anniversary! A massive thanks to our passionate and committed community. Your action helps us taking concrete action to protect the Ocean.

💧 Toxic water at the EU Parliament today wasn’t just a stunt - it was a warning

As trilogue talks draw to an end, EU lawmakers must stand firm:
⚠️ No more loopholes
⏰ No more delay
🌍 Protect our rivers, our health, and our future

Pollution is real. Action must be too.

🚫 No agreement on the Plastics Treaty in Geneva
Better no treaty than a watered-down one!
After 10 days of negotiations, States failed to adopt an agreement capable of ending the global plastic crisis.
August 15, 2025 at 10:11 AM
As we enter the final day of negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty, the new text proposed yesterday marks an unprecedented step backwards. 🔴
August 14, 2025 at 11:54 AM
The EU must lead the way towards an ambitious global plastics treaty that includes a real reduction in plastic production – not just better waste management. Call on European leaders to stand firm for an ambitious treaty 👉 tag @jessikaroswall.ec.europa.eu and @ec.europa.eu in the comments!

Yesterday, we joined the citizen mobilization organized by the NGO stop2drop in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva, where 1 million collected cigarette butts were displayed as a memorial to symbolize the urgency of tackling massive plastic pollution. @breakfreefromplastic.org

Negotiations for the Global Treaty to end plastic pollution will resume in Geneva. It is crucial to add cigarette filters to the list of products to be phased out. 🚬❌ Call on state representatives to end cigarette butt pollution ➡️ https://app.chilli.club/actions/184f6236-4dd4-4369-8dc5-a48c5104a579

In a few days, the final negotiations in Geneva could finally lead to a global treaty to end plastic pollution. But nothing is certain yet. Some major powers are pushing back against the ambition of the text, despite the environmental, health, and social emergency. 🔴

15 days before the negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty, it's time to mobilize for a legally binding agreement! From August 5 to 14 in Geneva, the final round of negotiations will take place for a global treaty aiming to tackle plastic pollution.

Water-based activities now take place all year round, not just during summer.

Surfrider has long been fighting for stronger water protection. ✊💧
July 10, 2025 at 3:49 PM
This is announced while the evaluation report published last clearly shows that this nearly 20-year-old directive fails to address today’s pollution threats (microplastics, cyanobacteria and algal blooms, emerging contaminants).
July 10, 2025 at 3:49 PM
A puzzling and deeply disappointing decision. 🔴

After years of waiting, the European Commission has finally decided not to revise the Bathing Water Directive. 💧🇪🇺
July 10, 2025 at 3:49 PM
"85% of European bathing waters are excellent." Yes, according to criteria established 20 years ago — criteria that are insufficient to address today’s challenges. Here is why it's problematic. ⬇️

After two weeks full of mobilization, here’s a look back at our participation in UNOC 3 in Nice! 🌊 We raised the voices of citizens and the Ocean, alongside numerous NGOs, to emphasize one key message: the Ocean must be at the heart of political decisions.

June 17, 2025 at 9:24 AM
2.5 years after the Commission's initial proposal, what’s needed now is political will. Healthy water is essential for our health, ecosystems, and future. Chemical pollution is already affecting our bathing and recreational sites across Europe. The facts are clear and the costs keep adding up.
June 17, 2025 at 9:24 AM
Today, representatives of EU institutions meet to finalise a deal on a long-overdue update of water pollution standards. We’re calling for bold leadership and urgent action. Read our joint priorities https://www.surfrider.eu/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/NGOs-priorities_priority-substance_27092024.pdf
