If a story stops being told, is preservation meaningful? Just a thought.

I think there's two types of preservation:

1. Keeping as much of the original work as possible in the most original state.

2. Accessibility to said work to be played and enjoyed.

I view translation to be in that second camp. Japanese -> English, yes. But also any English to another as well.

Orange Island for the NES features a shmup section for the boss fights. Here's a 30fps gif showing off my engine's current progress. 32 baddies/bullets/particles and up to 16 player bullets. The bar on the left shows CPU usage. Enough left for an audio driver! #nesdev

Plugging in a salt lamp, a full family prayer to remove all bad guys, a story about my bad dream with a man with a broom for a head, and picking up my one year old and pretending she's tooting on my boys.

Thats the ritual. I dont make the rules.

We miss the 3 month long carefree summer vacations. We don't miss having to go to highschool.

It really does go beyond just playing the games. Having the authentic cartridges, blowing on the pins, hooking up via composite onto a CRT, it all adds up to a comfort feeling we *do* want to "go back" to in some sense.

The simplicity of a child playing Mario 64 and discovering it for the first time cannot be understated.

I enrich my own interest in the retro by other ways of discovery. Histories, prototypes, hidden gems, and especially homebrew.

The sightjacking mechanic is incredible. Trying to deduce where your enemies are based on their point of view is awesome. And hearing their terrible sounds is creepy as hell.
