🧟‍♀️✨ We wrapped up Jane Austen December with one of the wildest adaptations out there—and let’s just say, we had thoughts. From plot holes to unexpected laughs to questionable tone shifts, this mash-up gave each of us a very different reading and watching experience.

BOOK THOUGHTS Lindsey's biggest challenge was the tone. The book moved between very serious Austen prose and sudden bursts of absurd humor, and the contrast didn't always blend well. She wished it committed to being either a full parody or a full drama-rather than bouncing between the two. Keri enjoyed parts of it, especially the humor, but she found the story riddled with gaps. Since the original novel revolves so heavily around the strict social rules of Regency society, the inconsistencies in those dynamics stood out and made the world feel less cohesive. Crystal struggled with this one-not because the concept wasn't fun, but because she read it immediately after Pride and Prejudice, making the mash-up feel slow and a bit dull by comparison. MOVIE THOUGHTS Lindsey enjoyed the movie for what it is: a fun, fresh twist that tries something totally different from the source material Keri felt the movie changed so much because it needed stronger narrative motivation; while the book reads more like a parody that loosely sits on top of Austen's plot, the movie feels like if's inspired by Austen and tries to build a more cohesive action storyline. However, she really disliked how drastically Elizabeth Bennet was rewritten-the book makes her an ultimate warrior, but the movie shifts that energy almost entirely to Darcy. By the time Crystal reached the movie, she was completely Pride & Prejudice-ed out, but she did love that the film gives an actual origin for the zombie outbreak-one of her favorite fantasy tropes. @BASEDONABOOKPODCAST MOVIE THOUGHTS CONT. PRIDE + PREJUDICE ZOMBIES And all three of us absolutely loved Matt Smith's scene-stealing performance, the delightfully over-the-top proposal fight, and the small but smart details-especially the fact that Darcy is rightfully paranoid about Jane possibly turning into an unmentionable at Netherfield. Honestly, that subplot works far better here than in the book. Where the movie lost us was its handling of Charlotte Lucas. Her storyline in the book is dark, emotional, and meaningful, and changing it stripped away a lot of the horror potential and heart.
