A cool ‘save the X’ story structure (like Jaws or Die Hard): get help, be the help, do the thing
Before midpoint they’re trying to call the cops; then for some apocalyptically cool reason that doesn’t end the sitch, so 2b is them being forced to do it themselves. Finale is where they actually do it
