Text reads: One dog owner shared on Instagram her joy of visiting the plovers and to do so purposefully left her dog at home. Another dog owner this morning purposefully brought her dog to the pier, sharing she likes to see the plovers with her dog...40 minutes pass with them not seeing the chicks. This was 40 minutes of the chicks not feeding because the plover parents saw a predator in the vicinity. Imani called the chicks back out to feed 3 minutes after they left. In the conversation with this dog owner, she noted the pier is "public property." To this, we agree but wonder what is "public property" but a shared space for all to enjoy equally without discomfort or fear. Yes, we have rights in public spaces. We also have responsibilities, responsibilities to one another in these shared spaces to allow others to be fear-free. While we find it is in the best interest of the plover chicks to walk dogs in other public spaces at Montrose right now, should you visit the Montrose pier with your dog while the plover family is spending its days pier-side, our ask is simply to walk with your leashed dog lake-side rather than pier-side.
