And yet, studies find that the majority of white Christians who attend multiracial churches are actually more likely than non-Christians to re-entrench the racial divisions these evangelicals claim they are interested in overcoming. Wadsworth, for instance, found that the evangelicals she studied were curiously unconcerned with pursuing racial justice at a structural or systemic level.22 Rather than advocate for a change of laws, or push to implement new social policies, or adopt different institutional practices that would mitigate the racial inequities that persist in the United States, the vast majority of white Christians in the evangelical racial justice movement and in this new crop of multiracial churches choose to address racism by pursuing racial reconciliation between individuals. In this way, these white Christians have identified racial injustice as a continuing problem but believe the way to solve this problem is simply by building relationships across racial lines. These are not the Christians in the East Room during the Kennedy years, marshalling their social capital to help pass new legislation. Rather, these contemporary white evangelicals are the Southern Baptists of Lyndon Johnson’s Rose Garden, hoping for social change one heart transformation at a time. This ineffective strategy of racial justice is due in part to the persistence of the individualistic colorblind approach to racial issues championed by segregationist Christians of an earlier generation. As colorblind rhetoric metastasized among conservative white Christians in the early years of the twenty-first century, it reinforced the racial separatism its original proponents had intended the century before. Such separatism lingers today—albeit unintentionally—even with white Christians who desire to see racial unity in their society. As sociologists Michael Emerson and Christian Smith explain, “Many race issues that white evangelicals want to see solved are generated in part by the way they themselves do religion, interpret their world, and live their own lives.”23 Emerson and Smith identify three components of contemporary white evangelical theology and practice that are primary contributors to the difficulty in bridging racial divides in American churches and society: “Accountable free will individualism, relationalism (attaching central importance to interpersonal relationships), and antistructuralism (inability to perceive or unwillingness to accept social structural influences).”24 According to Emerson and Smith, these basic rudiments of conservative white Christians’ faith “direct them to see the world individualistically . . . and to desire a color-blind society.”25 This dual emphasis on individualism and colorblindness has ironically led modern-day white evangelicals to believe that overcoming racism requires something akin to the very strategy segregationist Christians called for when trying to avoid racial integration in the late 1960s: “natural affinities, mutual appreciation of each other’s merits and the voluntary association of individuals.”

What has changed is simple: people are scared of crossing Trump this time. In researching this piece, I interviewed dozens of figures, including lawmakers, private sector executives, retired senior military figures and intelligence chiefs, current and former Trump officials, Washington lawyers and foreign government officials. Such is the fear of jail, bankruptcy or professional reprisal, that most of these people insisted or anonymity. This was in spite of the fact that many of the same people also wanted to emphasise that Trump would only be restrained by powerful voices opposing him publicly. At times, it has felt like trying to report on politics in Turkey or Hungary.

In 1909, an internal review of all peonage prosecutions in Alabama in the first decade of the century found that of forty-three indictments issued - including those of Pace and his co-conspirators, all ended in acquittals, dismissals, suspended sentences, or presidential pardons. A total of $300 in fines had been collected from the defendants; four of those convicted served short periods in jail.

A young white chambermaid at the English Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana named Louise Hadley became a brief cause célèbre in May 1903, hailed in the North and the South, after she refused to make up a bed that had been oc: cupied by Booker T. Washington. After being fired from her job, Hadley issued a public statement: "For a white girl to clean up the rooms occupied by a negro ... is a disgrace," she wrote. "I have always felt that the negro was not far above the brute." Committees formed in Georgia, Alabama, and Texas raised several thousand dollars in contributions to Hadley. "We admire this young woman's discrimination and think she took exactly the right action,'" beamed the Dadeville Spot Cash.
