There's no wrong way to do it. I personally wouldn't pay a cent for anyyin the home lab. I use TrueNAS scale for my NAS. But if I could do it over again, I'd probably go with proxmox for better VM management. TrueNAS is... Fine for that. But I've seen better for some things with hyper-v or VMware
