You don’t like being put in other people’s shoes too, but what choice is left when you are also so very desperate to be simply understood and who are we but mindless puppets at the mercy of some pretentious invisible force pulling our strings as if they know us better than we do ourselves? Ridiculous! Let’s cut away these bindings and make our own paths, why don’t we, Mother?

“Stop being so gods-damned dramatic,” Tiana von Riegan scoffs, a tense, hard line cutting into the blue skies behind her. “And if you want the truth you have to give yours up, too. Have you not learned this yet, boy?”

You sigh and drop your arms from where they were raised in mock supplication to the sky.

“I want to go there,” you say in the language of your mother’s homeland, wanting to show her you’re serious and you’ve done your research. This isn’t a joke to you.

“Why?” Tiana sighs raggedly, scrubbing a hand over her face. The lines of her face are on full display now. “Do you not wonder why I’m here in the first place?”

“Oh, I thought it was because you found true love. Are you confirming the rumors and saying that the people of Fódlan are all horrible?”

“Are you honestly suggesting to me that you want to run off over there in search of a lover?” Tiana asks incredulously.

You wince. Okay. Bad card to play, but it was worth a shot.

“I want to know,” you give it up. “You can’t expect me to keep swallowing all these lies about me and you for the rest of my life and not want to know for myself.”

Tiana is silent for a moment as she considers this. You stare into eyes that are a shade of brown so dark that they almost look black. Your eyes are green, like your father and half-siblings, but you aren’t one to rely on appearances.

“You can’t be Khalid, if you go,” Tiana says. “You might as well just arrive waving the Almyran flag over your head if you do.”

“I’ll pick a different name, then. I’ve thought about that too.”

“That’s not as easy as you think it is.”

There is something sinister at play here, something sealing Rhea’s lips shut and loosening Dimitri’s to the point of derangement. You wonder if you should just give them the slip and run home before you lose your life for something stupid. This is the part where you retreat.

But Marianne comes up to you and asks if you know when the students are allowed to go home, her fingers twisting into the fabric of her skirt nervously. Hilda’s voice lilts with a false sense of cheer as she says, “Don’t worry, Marianne! Claude has it handled for sure,” glancing at you with poorly concealed desperation. You spot Lorenz fidget in his seat and nod in agreement, quiet for once.

They’re all looking at you helplessly, your Golden Deer. You have never seen so many trusting faces turned in your direction before, and how ironic is it that you actually have no idea what you’re doing right now?

“The higher ups have my lips sealed,” you say with a rueful smile, “But Hilda’s right. Don’t worry. I’m working on it.”

“Yeah, come on guys, we can count on Claude,” Raphael assures everyone in his Big Brother Voice, backing you up. He actually sounds confident about it, which sells the idea, but the thing about Raphael is that he’s just genuine and has probably never tried to sell an idea like that in his life. So you don’t know what to feel about that. “Let’s just focus on what we can do.”

“You all heard the big guy, now get to it,” you nod, throwing a wink at Marianne for good measure. She manages a small smile, relief in her eyes.

When you get to your room you don’t drop on the bed facedown like you thought about the whole way there. You stand in the middle of the room for a solid minute, then you walk over to the wall and press your forehead to it with a thunk.

“Heavy is the head that wears the crown, you sucker,” you hiss quietly to the cold concrete, without any real heat. You have made your choice, and now you must shuffle through the cards in your hand and make do.

“Oh,” Sylvain says, and when you look at him his face is turned skywards. You follow his gaze.

“Ah, the moon’s out.” You hold up a hand to block the shade from your eyes, observing the faint view. “That’s rare.”

“Yeah,” Sylvain says. He hums, and you return your attention to him. He seems to notice your eyes on him, and he blinks. “It’s kinda like you, y’know?”

“Huh?”

“Subtle.” Sylvain says. You tilt your head.

“Well, that’s the first time I’ve gotten that,” you remark, a faint smile finding its way onto your face. “Usually I stick out in a crowd.“

“I mean, the moon’s not always subtle,” Sylvain says. “The sun, when it’s out, it’s out, you know? It’ll take like, a cloud or something else to block it. Eclipses are a big deal. The moon has phases, sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not. Even during the day, it’s there, supposedly.”

He gestures loosely towards the sky.

“Sometimes it’ll show itself,” he finishes, “and you’d be lucky to look up and notice.”

You blink, then you glance upwards to take in the sight of the daytime moon again. Huh. That—you don’t know what to make of that. You’ve heard a lot of things about yourself, but this. . .well, this is a first.

“Really poetic of you.” You push out a soft laugh, trying to make sense of your thoughts. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”

“Oh, please,” Sylvain laughs along with you. “I am not subtle. I don’t beat around the bush when I flirt—you’d know.”

No kidding, you don’t say.

His smile doesn’t reach his eyes, but you don’t call him out on it. It’s a kindness, but not really; it’s a gesture you hope will be returned to you, because there’s something squirming in the depths of your abdomen, something like fear, and you think you’d better kill it before it gets out of hand.

The two of you used to read together sometimes before bed, you and your mother. She doesn’t read you stories, but sometimes you did, aloud, while she listened and answered your occasional questions, though she would get annoyed when you asked obvious ones, just for the sake of asking them. You did dramatic voices better than she did, and often you would fall asleep to the sound of her restrained laughter as she would gather the books to set on a haphazard pile next to your bed.

(The most important thing your parents taught you was how to do things for yourself. The thing they overlooked was how the questions you asked them began to dwindle, and eventually how little you talked to them of anything important at all. You all spent a lot of time together, of course, and you love them like you know they do you. But you stopped giving them the full picture at some point, preferring to act on your own. You stopped giving anyone the full picture.)

But here’s one thing that always stuck with you:

“That’s infatuation, boy,” she answered, after you’d asked whether your parents were like the tragic couple in the fairytale you’d just read. It was a rare one from Fódlan. “It’s different.”

“How?”

She’d paused, hand on top of the teetering pile of books next to the bed, brow furrowed.

“It starts like that, sometimes,” she said. “Like something you can’t help. But it’s not real love until someone makes a choice, either just one or both. Real love, it’s powerful. You’ll do things you never thought you would. Not because you can’t help it. But because you will.”

You think about that a lot.

13. bdjfjd idk. won’t stop running took me one (1) month and my other claudevain multichapter fic has been on hold for over 5 years. probably some months to a year, there’s a period where i just go crazy then it has to simmer (?) i’m trying to exercise my writing muscles more tho

forgot the number haha that’s 2. abt pen and paper, i also found this pic from when i was writing my claude epistolary fic. i do not write linear lol so to help myself i handwrote a bullet point for each “scene” on strips of paper to visualize the thing. i had a lot of fun w that fic!!

“Hiya, so—you—you’re. . .not Lorenz.” Sylvaine’s saccharine tone flattened out into a confused drawl.

Claudia stared at her for a very long beat, then shrugged. “I know it’s really hard to tell, but fortunately not.”

Sylvaine’s eyes drifted down, spotting a familiar square of paper in the other’s hand. Shit.

“I’m guessing this wasn’t meant for me?”

Sylvaine hadn’t left much on the note, just a time and place and pretty generic bunch of sweet nothings that she’s definitely not used on other people before. She’d tucked it into what she’d thought was Lorenz’ book on their lunch break.

“You get a lot of love letters, huh?” Sylvaine joked.

“This is the first, actually.” Claudia said. She blinked, then smiled, sort of helpless and too casually, “Though I guess it doesn’t count. I thought it was an assassination threat before anything else, to be honest.”

Claudia started to turn away, but Sylvaine reached out and grabbed her by the wrist, mouth curling into a practiced grin even as something funny started to crawl up her stomach, to her chest and into her throat. She’d wanted company for the night, and something told her that she was in for a far more interesting evening than she’d expected.

“Flowers? What am I—“ Claudia cut herself off to look down at the bouquet she’d been handed. It wasn’t very well-made, just a sunflower and some daisies tied together, but she could find some appreciation in that, honestly. She would’ve gone with daisies too. That aside though— “What do I do with this?”

“Right?” Byleth shrugged. She slipped her hands into the pockets of her jeans, looking as calm and collected as ever. “Hilda said it’s standard for dates.”

Claudia stilled. She wasn’t opposed to it, but somehow clearly there’d been a misunderstanding somewhere. She’d managed to bag a first date without even trying, apparently. “Standard for what?”

“And score!” Lance slammed a hand down on the surface of the arcade machine, other hand thrusting up the laser gun in the air. The signs flashing in front of their faces in garish colors were completely foreign, but Lance didn’t need a translator to understand the sight of victory. “What’s that? Sorry, can’t hear any mullets from the winner’s platform!”

“This isn’t a fair match, I’m better at hand to hand!” Keith threw his hands up, his own plastic gun nearly clocking Lance in the face as he gesticulated, “If this was a fistfight I’d—“

“Still be on your ass in defeat.“ Lance interrupted, crossing his arms. “And you know it.”

“Really—“

“Ahem!” Coran cleared his throat, not too far away. Lance and Keith looked at each other and rolled their eyes.

“Fine, I’ll lower the bar, just for you,” Lance turned up his nose, sticking his thumb out and pointing it behind him. “Let’s do that one.”

The font written over the machine, like all the others, was alien, but the platform with the little light-up arrow squares and guard rail was recognizable anywhere in the universe, even if it did look a bit different. Keith started to look and recoiled.

“That’s—“

“Take it or leave it! I’m leaving this place a winner either way.”

“Oh really?” Keith snorted. “Okay. Fine.”

They marched toward the arcade machine.

(They would find out later on that alien Dance Dance Revolution was co-op rather than competitive.)
