that can be a difficult thing to figure out, but i think ultimately it comes down to whether you feel like an animal enough to identify yourself as one, and want to use the therian label (i would also research shifts and determine if thats something you experience!)

fun fact is you are absolutely correct! a lot of medieval art of animals are drawn from descriptions. a guy travels to a far off continent and sees a giraffe, comes back and tells everybody about the horse they saw with a snake for a neck and leopard spots (not a real example, just the general idea)
